Yan was born and educated in West Java, Indonesia. After finishing his bachelor degree at Padjadjaran University, Indonesia, he moved to Sydney, Australia to pursue his Master of Science at University of Sydney with Professor(s) Len Lindoy and Cameron Kepert. He was shortly appointed as a lecturer at Department of Chemistry, Padjadjaran University before moving to Melbourne, Australia to pursue a PhD study with Dr Colette Boskovic at University of Melbourne. Yan took up his first postdoctoral fellowship with Professor F. Richard Keene at James Cook University from 2009 to 2011 and the second postdoctoral fellowship with Professor Leone Spiccia at Monash University from 2011 to 2013. He was granted a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship to work with Professor Kazuyuki Ishii at Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo from 2013 to 2015. From April 2015, Yan commenced his work as an Associate Professor at Professor Yuji Kubo research group, Department of Applied Chemistry, Tokyo Metropolitan University. Yan's research work spans the area of coordination chemistry, molecular magnetism, bioinorganic chemistry, dye-sensitized solar cells and artificial photosynthesis.
